EEG (Electroencephalogram)

We offer in-clinic EEG (Electroencephalogram) testing as part of our comprehensive neurological diagnostic services. An EEG is a safe, painless, and non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain. It is one of the most important tools in diagnosing and managing neurological conditions in children and adults.

What is an EEG?

An EEG measures the brain’s electrical signals through small sensors (electrodes) placed on the scalp. The recorded brainwave patterns help our neurologist identify abnormalities in brain activity that may be causing symptoms such as seizures, developmental concerns, or behavioral changes.

Why is an EEG Done?

Our specialist may recommend an EEG to:

  • Diagnose epilepsy and classify seizure type
  • Evaluate unexplained episodes of staring, jerking, or loss of consciousness
  • Assess brain activity in children with developmental delay or regression
  • Investigate sleep disorders and abnormal movements during sleep
  • Monitor treatment response in children on anti-epileptic medications
  • Evaluate encephalopathy or altered mental status

Types of EEG Available at Our Clinic

  • Routine EEG – Standard recording performed while the child is awake and relaxed
  • Sleep EEG – Recording during natural or induced sleep to capture sleep-related activity
  • Prolonged EEG – Extended recording for better capture of abnormal activity

How is the EEG Performed?

  • Small electrodes are gently placed on the scalp using a water-based gel – no needles or cuts involved
  • The child is asked to relax, and the recording typically takes 30–60 minutes
  • Activation procedures such as deep breathing (hyperventilation) or flashing lights may be used to provoke abnormal activity
  • The test is completely painless and safe for children of all ages

How to Prepare Your Child

  • Wash and dry hair before the appointment – avoid oils, gels, or conditioners
  • Ensure your child has adequate sleep the night before (or follow sleep-deprivation instructions if advised)
  • Continue all regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise
  • Bring a favourite toy or comfort item to help your child stay calm

Is EEG Safe?

Yes. EEG is a completely safe, non-invasive procedure with no radiation or electrical current passed into the body. It is routinely performed in children of all ages, including infants.

After the EEG

Results are interpreted by our pediatric neurologist and discussed with you during a follow-up consultation. The findings guide diagnosis and help tailor the most appropriate treatment plan for your child.
